Patience is the fourth discipline.

And I have run out.  In an unfortunate development, the killer ride left both IT bands totally shot. Apparently my left leg has decided to join the fun. Nothing like a little regression to remind me that I am not the athlete I used to be. I've been fit and re-fit to Clementine the Bicycle, and I'm comfortable on it. But any bit of climbing and I'm back to ground zero. I am not a swimmer or a cyclist. I just need to run. Patience sucks. If this keeps up I'm going to get a big mac, some pork rinds and the Costco bag of peanut m&ms and retire to my couch forever. I might even get cable. I could start a blog pool on how long it takes me to hit 300 pounds.

In less whiney news, and considering that when my extreme frustration passes you couldn't pay me enough to really eat a pork rind, tomorrow night an Ironman pro named Brendan Brazier will be talking about the Thrive Diet, a completely plant-based way of eating, in Waikiki. I know nothing about Brendan or the diet, but I'm curious to hear how someone fuels endurance training as a vegetarian. In addition to my penchant for chocolate and peanut butter, I tend to turn to highly processed foods when really hungry. I don't intend to give up all meat, but there is certainly much room for my diet to improve, so I'm all for hearing how this guy does it. Thank you, John Mayers for sending the flyer my way.

Here's the event flyer. Note the free refreshments star. What are the odds they're serving m&ms? Chocolate started on a plant..

  1. Oh my gosh, I have his book, read it, love it, make his recipes all the time! YOU WILL LOVE HIM!

    Okay... suck it up princess!

I already know how much fan support and blog readers LOVE you and will probably tell you all sorts of "so sorry Rach, hang in there," I AM NOT SAYING NONE OF THAT TO YOU!!!!!!!!! Why, because as somebody that TOTALLY believes in you I WILL NOT help you pity yourself!

Rachel Ross... you hang in there, when the going gets tuff and the $h!T hits the fan you have to KEEP going and be positive... one more day, one more after that, and another after that until the situation gets better! YOU have had injuries before and always bounce back! YOU will from this too...

So... more swimming, more aqua jogging, MORE of what you can do and soon enough you will be able to do what you want to do... I bet the 11 days on the boat is JUST what the doctor is ordering for you! TIME OFF, no chasing boys on bikes, no running 6:30 miles the day after 6wks of no running, no racing at Honu cheering on Katherine... pamper yourself!

Sorry I am ranting... I know it sucks, I have been there too, but in surfing when I had titanium in my arm and staples in my head and missed a WHOLE season of surf and contests! (when surfing was my sport). I just believe in you too much and have looked up to you for too long, especially when I "accidentally" got pregnant and thought sport life was over, you proved it wasn't... now suck it up princess and KNOW it will get better...
I am in NO mood to be the only Hawaii girl busting my @$$, I need you!

  2. pork rinds....BLACH! just the words pork rinds make me want to YAK!

Hang in there girl...you'll back to running before you know it. Why don't you use your time off wisely...go bring the kiddos to see KUNG FU PANDA. I heard through the grape vine that it's a great flick :)

  3. Bummer! that sucks! You should have swam with us instead...I'd offer to swim with you, but I certainly couldn't keep up now...I can't kick w/o the ankle hurting.

I agree chocolate and peanut butter are plant based. So are the Macadamia Nut Hershey Kisses I've been eating all day

  4. I feel for you. And I'm going through similar stuff myself. It completely blows when our bodies won't just play nice--especially when we have big plans!

  5. Rest up and heal up. After all of these hamstring problems and with all of the time swimming you may end up first out of the water this year.

  6. Ugh, I totally feel for you Rachel. I'm sick and disgusted with my injury - I am runner too, not a stupid swimmer or cyclist! I want to run and feel good again. And I'm sorry, but aquarunning IS NOT THE SAME, AGGHHHHH. So I am going to Costa Rica where I can't bike and probably won't swim very much...that should help, right? :)

  7. Hey RR- keep that head up! I am back off running this week after a hill/speed session that I apparently wasn't ready for, but all we can do is learn and move on.

I just got the Thrive Diet a few weeks ago, and while I still haven't attempted any of the more involved recipes (NYC kitchens and NYC prices don't lend themselves to a natural diet unfortun.), the basics have been really easy to make and incorporate into my training- smoothies, natural energy drink and natural gu!

  8. I cannot imagine you turning into a couch potato. Still, I hope you focus on the activities that help you stay in good shape with a long-term goal in mind. Try to think about what you would like to be doing in 20 years' time when you have a lot more free time. No point in getting all buss' up now if you cannot be at your best later. Wish you a speedy recovery.

  10. You are too funny - your blogs always make me laugh. If you want to learn how to quickly add on 300 lbs, just take a few days vacation at Walt Disney world with the kids. Plenty of folks who qualify for what you described and to top it off they attempt to gain more by zipping around in electronic chairs to make sure they do not loose any weight!

  11. Injuries are teh suck!! Stick with the maintenance, it's boring but it works..

I don't know about the vegan stuff, especially in Hawaii, it's pretty hard to give up fish...

  12. Being on my third injury this season, I feel your frustration. Sucks with a capital
    S.... no doubt about it.

  13. Let's look at the bright side. Sports you CAN do:

    Swim
    Water polo
    Horseshoes
    Shuffleboard
    Kayak
    Motorcross
    Supermoto
    Rodeo
    Putt Putt
    Rock climbing

That's all I've got for you right now but looking at that list I'd say you have many exciting days of sport ahead until the ITB heals.

Perspective :) I'd tell you to give it time but I covered that already on my blog today.

  14. Bree...staples in the head? That explains a lot!!! :) and Titanium in the arm? explains your crooked swim arm!!

RR---head over to the Shack and order some killer chicken wings and a pitcher of Heiniken. Then all will be better the next day!!
    haha!

  15. Oh Rach, I gotta agree with WEE and the TOUGH LOVE! That's the only way to go...just like Coach P. I guess Coach is rubbing off on Wee! Love ya, my favorite shopping buddy!! Oh that reminds me, gotta tell you about the new sun dress and shoes ;-) When are we going together?

  16. OH I will be your BIG MAC buddy...I LOVE them :) Hang in there Rach..you will be back to running really soon!! Then your coach P will be working you so hard :)

  17. Rach-I strongly believe everything happens for a reason.....and there's some reason your patience is being tried and you're having to deal with this frustrating challenge. You are a triathlete to the core (an insanely talented one)and you will get there....chin up, girl. You still get to be you......even if that kind of sucks right now. The tri gods want you to work on your swim at the moment and it's obviously paying off.

    Hang in there,
    Phaedra

  18. Wow, I think Bree gave you an ass chewing! =)

Chin up, eyes forward!!! Soon you'll be begging Coach P to give you a day off from running!

  19. Rachel - I thought of another sport:

    table tennis

    I also found this:

Even when you are not racing you are being feared thousands of miles away.

  20. Had to Laugh at Brees comment. And ELFs as well. You hang in there, you be strong. THis is only temporarly, but what you will gain from this - the mental strength, the super fast swimming ability, the will to press onwards and upwards even though things don't always go your way - THAT will last forever. And I am certainly happy that I'm not in your AG.

    So there.

Croquet is another one for ELFs list. :)

  21. Willpower is my fifth discipline....try being married to a wine/liquor sales rep who brings home tasting bottles every night! It's going to come together for you, Rachel, just give the body the time it needs and enjoy a good laugh. Vince Vaughan and glass of pinot noir always pulls me out of a funk...damn wine again...better than the whine though! Pulling for you in Colorado and drawing from your willpower...Taryn

  22. I'm not going to go thru my whole IT band recovery process or how long it took, but I just want you to know that there is hope! At times I never thought I'd run again... really.

And, in 10 days I will be completing my second Ironman :-)

  23. Found you through Liz.

Looks like your evil pro twin raced in Vancouver too. I'm guessing you could kick her butt even injured.
