The Needle and the Damage Done..

No, I'm not taking up heroin, but I am a bit like the addict Neil sings about in the Needle in the Damage Done. I am back on the sauce. I went a whopping 27 hours without my Starbucks soy latte(liquid crack) and then I caved. The guys at work are disappointed in me, because apparently I talk even more after my soy latte. I just didn't have a good enough reason to quit. However, I am still off the junk food. Today's big challenge will be the baseball potluck. I might have to duct tape my mouth shut.

In other non-news, I got a big old cortisone shot to the knee yesterday. It's all very Varsity Blues quarterback (put me back in coach, I know I can win us the league championship now!) but as the rest continues and the recovery stalls, I'm getting a little desperate. There are only so many stretches, exercises, massages and treatments a girl can do.

I used The Google to find a picture related to The Needle and the Damage Done, one of my 68 favorite Neil songs, and then I found it: Live Neil Young, all over youtube. Why hadn't I thought to look for that before? I actually started this posting 14 hours ago, and am just now done watching all the Neil on youtube. I am starving, and I don't know where my children are. This is much better youtube use than watching skinny white guys do IT band stretches and exercises. Or dolphiny humans swim in slow motion with really boring commentary.

Back to the cortisone. I hear that it just might make me think my knee works again and trick me into training too early. But I swear I'm just adding it to the healing regimen, and will continue to rest another couple of weeks, at least. I'm not so ancy now that I got my 20 miler fix this morning.. (I joke, I joke.)

Here's a favorite - Harvest Moon was the first dance at our shotgun wedding, approximately 57 years ago:

  1. DO NOT RUN FOR A FEW WEEKS AFTER THE CORTISONE SHOT...I'm speaking experience (A VERY PAINFUL ONE when the shot wore off-mid run- and I was even more injured than before!)

  2. Welcome back FROM the dark side. And what side is that? - you ask. It's the "no coffee in my life" side. A scary place, indeed.

Enjoy the soy latte! I'm a plain old coffe girl OR with fat free french vanilla. OR, if I'm feeling especially good, I'll go for the Chai Tea Latte with a shot of espresso and vanilla soy milk. I swear, my barista thinks I'm nuts.

  3. Hi Rachel! Love your blog :)

Just curious if you have tried any ART for the ITBS? (Many apologies if you have and I missed it in your posts). I had horrible ITB pain last year due to ramping the run mileage up too fast, and 4 sessions with my PT/ART specialist helped me get back on my feet! That in combination with a little bit of ultrasound therapy, and I was brand new again.

I really hope that you heal and recover quickly!!

Sending hugs and bottomless soy lattes! :)

  6. Okay, there are reasonable tortures in life (like not running when you are injured) and then there are just plain crazy ones (trying to wean off of Starbucks on your own free will). You have completely gone off your rocker if you try to torture yourself while you are already being tortured. Ridiculous!:)

I hope you experience some healing and relief with the shot. Thinking good thoughts. Keep me posted.

  7. Maybe the docs could inject a soy latte instead of cortisone :) Love your blog.

  8. All is once again stable and safe in the world. RR has returned to coffee.

After spending days in St. Croix with nothing but my french press mug I found Starbucks in the San Juan airport. It was like angels singing to me.

  9. Hey Rachel,
I know this is a bit random, but I found your blog through ELF's... I have an identical injury and have been doing identical treatments, with no success... Would love to commiserate/talk details about what is working for you and what is not. Will you email me when you get a chance? jessihs at yahoo.

  11. Aaah, good old Neil Young. The Harvest Moon DVD is awesome!!! The Starbucks into the knee is a good idea too. I gave up coffee for 1 day when I found out I was pregnant...then made hubby call doctor...he was as relieved as I that some cafeine was okay. That was the LOOOONGEST day of my life!
    Hope the shot works!!!
