Wind day.

It's our equivalent of a snow day. Last time the schools shut down, I was in the tenth grade and Hurricane Iniki was rolling in to town. Jenny and I went to Sandys to watch the ocean crash across the highway - a close call with Darwinism. Tomorrow, the schools are closed for wind. I called my friend Derek, a meteorologist at NOAA. He said my bike commute in would be hard, because it's a westerly wind. But that it would be 15-30 mph as usual, with the occasional 60 mph gust. And that the school closures are a direct result of Katrina. It's howling on our hillside, and I may wuss out and take the bus in. Tonight was more up up up and less ow ow ow. Tantalus was beautiful, and it was a fun group of boca folks, but coming down in the dark was sketchy. This is the view from the first lookout on the second climb.

Sky's art wasn't porn. It was a photo of a hibiscus in a puddle on a bench and it's going to a state art competition. According to Wyatt, the winner gets a ten billion dollar scholarship. I'll never work again! I'm pretty sure he's full of crap. I was pretty impressed with her photo, but more impressed that someone let her hold their camera.

I found this from the marathon. I look like I'm about to rush the quarterback. I hit three months without swimming this week.. And that was the easiest four pounds of shoulder I've ever lost. I heart atrophy. Next week, I go back. Look out, LT.

I was considering the pool, but blogland turned me off. I guess it's part of triathlon, but I don't know if we have pools like that here.  The ridiculous over-competitiveness, the splits, and the lane drama I've been reading about leave me with not a drop of motivation to swim. So to the ocean I'll go.. starting Tuesday. Really. That'll give me a few months of swimming before I consider a race, and bring back those lovely linebacker delts.

  1. Wow, that looks windy. You look very focused on that photo - I still think it's quite neat that the marathon starts at 5 am.

  5. HOLY cow, with the biking there is no need to improve the swim, you'll just bike through the field after surviving that wind.

As for the bike, coach was brutally honest with me in my debriefing, "Bree, you suck on the bike, you are out of bike shape". Not a single tear, all the surfing and playing in Costa Rica was WELL worth it...

So, lets make a deal, I will get on the bike if you get in the water...??? let me know when you start, then I will start, unless you want to make our entire 09 season a relay team together??

  6. If I start swimming now, I might make it to HI in time to join you for your OW swim. :) Yeah (snort) sure. Seriously - OW swimming with you in the ocean would be great! Cheers to Sky for her artwork! Good luck with that wind thing. :)

  7. Ah Rach the swims the shortest part of the race, I wouldn't worry! (obviously your not) LOL!! If only the swims were as good as the blog world, we would all be fantastic swimmers!

Looking forward to seeing Sky's artwork. Good for her!

  8. I am totally beginning to agree with Beth that swimming is overrated. And also realizing the Strawberry Canyon Aquatic Masters is a very special place where my heart will always be and my memories will live forever. It makes me realize that it was more about the character of the team (because, duh, it's BERKELEY!) and less the swimming. Because now swimming in a pool just isn't as fun.

So I say YES to the ocean! Why not?

As for the bike commute...even _I_ would take the bus. We don't want you to get blown away! Be safe.

    Congrats to Sky, too!!!

  12. We had 5 days off in the last month for snow days... we got over 30 inches in 24 hours. Could be worse - LOL!

  13. So jealous you have the ocean as an alternative to the pool. Lake Michigan is a little frozen these days.

  14. Oh I need to have kids! A billion dollars?! :) Ocean swimming sounds much better than our pool drama!

  15. I vote for you and Bree relaying it in 09. Now THAT would be something to watch!

  18. me too! i wanna see sky's pic!!! as for the swimming, well, it's not going anywhere...but if you do want some of the cut-throat action, you're always welcome to come swim at fac in boulder. one of my favourite lane "fights" i overheard involved glenn telling simon l.'s wife that "i already have my own wife to bitch at me...".
    how was the commute?

  20. I swim in my own lane and create my own drama - it's very peaceful. I highly recommend it!
