Check out hot old guy in the funky safety goggles and suspenders.. and the blur of the self-proclaimed fastest girl in the world running by in the background. And my first ever road bike!
I've begun to have some faith in my health again. The migraine triggers have been figured out, and I get hit once or twice a month now, and it resolves after a night's sleep. The health routine is not always easy. In addition to 8 hours of sleep a night, it requires that I don't eat chocolate, nuts (my beloved PB is out!), bananas, artificial colors, beer.. and a whole bunch of other stuff. Fluorescent lights kill me. All typical training food - gels, bars, bloks, drinks - are out, so all workouts are done on water. But I think the thing that's helping the most is the cutting back on what I expect myself to do. I leave the house at 5 am on my bike, and get home between 4 - 7 pm, depending on whether or not I train. And then I try to keep up around the house with the cleaning and the bills, catch up with the kids, and get everything I need to do done in time for another 8 hours. I've been saying no a lot. I can't help coach a team, I can't go out Thursday night, I can't take on that project that's going to run 60 hours a week, and I can't travel to that race. I've said no to friends that I would love to support, and I have had to ask Ramsey for help more than ever before. Sometimes I feel like a real bitch, but it's working. I feel better all the time.
This morning I got up to do the Boca ride, but it was 64 degrees. That is too cold for my short shorts and my hawaii version of arm warmers that are actually made just to prevent sun burn. It suddenly felt like too much, so I went for a run instead. It was perfect the perfect day for a long run and then the beach.. I stand up paddled in a cashmere sweater.. cashmere + cold, clear, ocean = best combo ever. I took Wyatt out for a little paddle..
i'm glad you are learning how to say "no" AND ask for help! those are two very valuable life lessons!!!
ReplyDeleteyou are keeping some crazy hours so you really have to make your well being a priority!
I always say no now. Unless it's Moana asking for food, in which case 'no' is not an option!
ReplyDeleteCool you got a road bike!
So glad you've got the migraine issue under control. That must be a huge relief. Congrats on the new bike!
ReplyDeleteAnd from someone who has never paddled - cashmere, really?
Sounds like you have found the perfect balance for you. Well done!
ReplyDeleteyay blue!! I LOVE my blue road bike!!! You are going to LOVE having a road bike. It really makes riding in a group better and you can really work hard on it. Can't waitto hear all about it! I like your paint design...mine is blue (yep a blue Blue):)
ReplyDeleteNice bike. I really need to figure out how to start saying no from now one.
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear you are discovering what works. Sorry to hear it puts a damper on some things, but you will find a balance. Hugs.
ReplyDeleteNothing bitchy about taking care of yourself! I'm glad your migraines are under control now.
ReplyDeleteGreat bike! I wish I had a Blue road bike.
i dream of a life when 64 is cold. granted i'm in "the south" but NC still has the word "north" attached...yesterday's ride consisted of pockets of freezing rain stinging my face while my toes were frozen....yeah 64....too cold to ride...i could dig that.
ReplyDeleteooh! preeeeetyyy road bike! just say no to nuts, chocolate and ride snacks? i think i'd lose ten pounds...
ReplyDeletesky IS fast.
great to hear some resolution for the migraines.
ReplyDeleteNice bike! Hey will you ask that guy where he got his suspenders we are in dire need of some for Antonio to keep his pants up!!
Cheers!
Just say no! Best advice the D.A.R.E officer ever told me...
ReplyDeleteNo joking, it is 71* here and I am not ready to swim in that yet... waiting till it hits 80*, ha ha ha, aren't we spoiled!
Love the bike!
Lovely bike!
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear you're taking good care of yourself.
And who knew cashmere was good workout gear? I learn something new every day.
Too funny- 64 is my idea of perfect riding weather! Not too hot, not too cold...I'll trade you the snow any day :)
ReplyDeleteHaven't started Molokai, but it comes highly recommended- Book club is this week- This month's was 'Fieldwork' and it was VERY good.
You guys are killing me with your "cold" weather. Just killing me.
ReplyDeleteAgreeing with D here...it was 64 on saturday and you bet your buns I was in jersey and shorts - no arm warmers, no vest, NOTHIN' ELSE! It was GLORIOUS! (cold in the shade, but shhhhh...) You guys are wussies.
ReplyDeleteI'm jealous of your bike. That is suh-WEEEEEET!
I need to find somebody who wants to give me a bike.
Finally, I am SO thrilled for you that you're figuring out what works and what doesn't. Learning to say no and ask for help are two of the hardest things women will ever have to learn to do but we need to. I would be sad without PB and beer (but like Beth, I'd prob also lose a good 15 lbs) but you gotta do what you gotta do. Keep it up, woman!
now's nto a bad time to stop eating peanut butter...
ReplyDeletePretty bike and saying no can be the hardest thing in the world!! I'm still trying to learn how to do it better! Good for you!
ReplyDeleteI need the course on how to say no. Good for you Rach! I have to echo the 64 degrees is too cold to bike?! I would like a day that hits into the 40's.
ReplyDeleteLove your bike!
Thought of you while shopping at Lululemon in Soho--but it was like 20 degrees and snowing out. Paddling in cashmere? In 64 degrees? I need a picture of that!
ReplyDeleteNice new road bike, you are going to love it! Are you putting aerobars on it? I am just starting to get used to a TT bike for the first time ever.
ReplyDeleteThat is hilarious that you find 64F cool - I would be loving that right now!
Glad to hear you got the terrible migraines under control.
So glad to hear that you're feeling better!
ReplyDeleteOn the bars, etc ... salted boiled potatoes are just awesome for long rides and runs. I had never thought of trying this but learned about it from my Columbian roomies this fall. Apparently, PowerBars are like $5 or something over there.
A bit bigger to carry but cheap, effective, no artificial stuff and oh so yummy!
64? It was 58 over here Sunday morning. Way too cold.
ReplyDeleteI am glad that you are feeling better. I am curious about the cashmere on the water, too. I'm picturing a ratty old cashmere sweater that you inherited from your dad...but then again, maybe Lululemon makes things in cashmere? As far as relying on Ramsey more, "In sickness and in health", right? Plus he can do anything with that tool belt he's got on.
ReplyDeleteI watched President Obama give his inaugural address on TV. Even for one so far removed from the US, it was great to follow what was going on and to reflect on 8 years in Hawai'i.
ReplyDeleteI am also pleased things are going well for you healthwise and in general with work, training, family, etc. I know for myself there is always far more to do in a day than there is time for, and so it is a constant struggle of trying to find a good balance.
The cooler weather here has affected my swimming these last two months, but summer starts in mid-February in Kaohsiung, so not long to go now before training becomes normal again.
Great news about your success with managing the migraines! I think it's interesting that you have the same triggers I do, all except bananas. Hope you find something that works for you in regards to race nutrition, that stuff is migraine fodder for sure. Good choice with the stand-up paddling with your son instead of a cold bike ride, that looks really relaxing.
ReplyDeleteIt is hard to slow down, say no, and take care of yourself. It's a good thing the reward is how much better you feel.
Glad to see you are figuring it out! Sounds like a killer paddle board session.
