All the climbing East Oahu has to offer.

Katherine and I missed the boca hell-hill ride yesterday, so today was make-up day.  We started with 20 flat miles and a killer sunrise over Maui and Molokai, where it appeared to be raining:

And then we headed up Kamehame Ridge. The gate at the top of the neighborhood was locked, so we climbed over it. Because we're not all that smart. This was the view from the concrete pad at the very top...

The road back down was sketchy.

At the top of Laukahi, after the pavement, then the ridged concrete, and then the brick/cobblestone all ran out, there was a gate at the trailhead and then.. some more pavement. Since we had started a habit of hopping gates, we continued up the trail until the pavement ended. And then, at the top of our third ridge and about 3.5 hours into the ride, this happened.

I have got to figure out something I can eat during training, because 60 mi water-only rides are getting old! I am too unprepared to bake potatoes like Miranda suggested (thank you!) - maybe next week.

After Laukahi, Sierra Drive felt like a hill. I was able to ride most of it aero, while Katherine changed her second flat of the day at the bottom. I called in the bailout, and bribed the family to pick me up at Kahala with the promise of Whole Foods snacks & Starbucks.. and then an afternoon at the beach.

Clementine loves coffee.

  1. I bet coffee never tasted so good. At least you will have some great memories of hopping fences, laughing and bonking to tell forever. Great job in getting in your "make up" workout. I feel like I am always doing those:)

  2. rice cakes with nut butter? those would be good, but likely in tiny pieces when you finally pulled them out in their baggie!

  4. That is the funniest foto I ever ever ever saw in my life! (the one of you bonked on the road). Not saying Im happy you bonked, but that is hilarious (the foto)... what a way to show how bonk feels!

Coach just put me on carbo pro, easy, 2 scoops of it and 2 Nuun tabs and it has saved me... Hope you get that nutrition dialed in. I already but $3 bucks on you to win Best Of US Hawaii title... I can't afford to lose 3 bucks, that's a Jamba Juice!

  5. You are too funny! What a view! Makes me wish I lived there...sunshine and a beautiful view everyday! That Starbucks looks too good--think I'm going to have to run out and get one right now! Courtney

  6. I know that you like chocolate. I heard a rumor that TdF riders eat Nutella and white rice rolled into little balls of heaven. I will have to try it this season. It sounds good to me.

  7. As horrible as it sounds, Entamenn doughnuts are the only thing I've found I can eat on the bike. I can't tell you how many folks looked at me in horror in T2 of my ironman when I downded a powdered doughnut. But I've tried all the engineered food, all other recommendations and at the end of the day the only thing I can get down (and hold down) are doughnuts. Which actually makes me much more enthusiastic to go biking! :)

  9. I can't believe you guys rode your tri bikes. You should ride Haleakala with us. I'm taking my truck over on Friday/back Monday and can stuff your bike in it. Come over on the first flight on Sunday.

  11. i just think you need a special aero coffee holder on your bars so you can slip as you ride.
or be stealthy enought to steal stuff out of your riding mates' jersey pockets.

  13. A few years ago I read, in a fitness magazine, that raisins are the best for replacing glycogen in your muscles. Also, in the woman who does Ultramans had a long blog post about her love of milk and how it's the only thing that works for her on those long ultraman. For me, Toblerone seems to a magical remedy for whatever ails me, (usually headaches and migraines which I guess are mini-bonks?). Maybe those small cartons of soymilks would be handy, they don't have to be refridgerated, they're small, and they come in delicious flavours and have a good combo of protein, and carbs. I've only bonked 2 times in my life, and I was so freaked out about them that my strategy is to avoid bonking all together by not exercising long enough to drain the glycogen from my body and the glucose from my brain. So far, so good.

  16. I didn't know getting off the bike and laying down for a bit was kosher tri-training! That's what I've been missing :-)

LOVE the Obama suit! You rock.

  17. i'm with maggs. what the crap were you doing on your TRI BIKES foor all that climbing?!?!!? didn't you just get a fancy new blue!? omg omg.

nutella on bread is pretty delicious. but really, for the most handy calories, they have this section at the bike shop called nutrition and they have these SUPER cool snacks in little packets - you can get cookie-granola-bar type things (typically called "clif" or "powerbar", same as what's on your jersey) OR you can get these squishy sugary jelly packet things (typically called "gu" or "powershot") and you just squirt them in your mouth and they have a million flavours!!

:D i'm going to hell AND my teeth are rotting...

  18. That pic is hilarious. Your ability to ramp it up in training is so impressive. I like to think bc I'm in the frozen tundra that THAT is my limitation. ha. It's so great to read the job and migraines and stuff worked out.

    Oh yeah anonymous. get bent.

    :) Erin

  19. You should try going into SBUX with one of those profile aero bottles and see if they'll fill it up as a grande, then you could get a frappacino and that would be good for the longer rides. You might as well go for the whipped cream too. Please take care of Ben if you see him.
