I'm a pain in my own ass these days.

If I lived with me, this would be my list of complaints:
  • Cries incessantly about never-ending neurological distress
  • Disappears for 14 hours, then comes home covered in HCl burns and refuses to do laundry
  • Complains irrationally about Phillip Seymour Hoffman's success
  • Can't see out of left eye, but has zero sense of humor for pirate jokes
  • Eats all the peppermint ice cream
This is the super-taper. It's also the super-bitchy taper. I haven’t exercised since Sunday’s long run, trying to stave off the vision loss of round two by taking it easy. The odds of running the marathon diminish as my head pain lingers on, my vision goes in and out, and my confidence in my health continues to wane.

Had you asked six weeks ago how I would rate my health in comparison with the rest of America, I would have said I was significantly healthier. At least two standard deviation above the mean, I would have told you. I had faith in my body and its ability to do whatever my little brain told it to do. Now I don’t trust it enough to commit to JQ’s birthday dinner in 5 hours. I admit it - I am whelmed. I want to sleep for a month and wake up when this is over. Without health there really is nothing else.

We had a little convo about living in America here today. Henry, my nerdy one, is all hopped up on patriotism as the anniversary of Pearl Harbor approaches. He likes America for all the standard reasons: Freedom, hotdogs, baseball, wars.. Wyatt, however, is just here for the video games. Sky likes America because the cockroaches all freeze in the winter. Whatever that means.

  1. RACH! If I could take a day or two (I really don't want what you have going on) just to give you a break I would...

I am so sorry! WISHING YOU ALL THE BEST! Maybe you'll get a Christmas miracle and it really will all be over soon!

  2. Oh oh... I found a pirate quote yesterday and I haven't had a reason to use it....

To err is human...to aargh is pirate.

Sorry, couldn't resist. I have an eye patch if you want it ;-) (that's not a wink, but a smiley with one eye closed).

I'll stop now. Rest and taper up, hope you feel better soon.

  3. Eek! There must be some weird marathon voodoo going around these days. I hope you're back in business for Honolulu, but mostly I hope the little migraine trolls stop stabbing your skull. Even without your head, you're still 2 stand. dev. above the mean for health in this country.

  4. Hard to know what to say. Even if I cannot say much, at least I will be thinking over the things you are writing. Anyway, just try to remain positive and try to resist those thoughts that make you feel down. Believe that 100% good health should be "normal" for you, and take each day as it comes.

  6. I hope this vicious migraine of yours goes away soon and for good. Keep your hopes up and maybe the super taper will work out perfect for Honolulu.

  9. Have you tried a nutrional approach? Headaches and migraines can be caused by magnesium deficiency. Pumpkin seeds, spinach, and chocolate are good sources. My doctor did a blood test and it showed I was low in iron, so I've been on supplements and I've noticed I have a lot less fatigue and am able workout with more energy.

You know, I'm really wondering if it's stress of the new job that is the culprit, because it started when you started your job and it's still going on. And the stress of being the sole income earner with the mortgage in the balance. maybe? The good news is you don't have to change your job, just the way you handle the stress of it.

Something you might try is to trade in some of the heavy duty exercise such as bike rides and swims, (but keep the running because you enjoy it), and do yoga instead. Yoga is excellent for stress and it gives you a hot bod to boot. Tai Chi maybe? The heavy aerobic workouts that are the basis of triathlon can flip into adding stress because it's such a physical stress on the body.

I know, my posts are too long! sorry about that! :P But, I'm so rooting for you as a fellow migraine sufferer! I hope you're doing better, I think you're doing really well, considering.

    Order this book: it's awesome!

  10. I think Maggs is going to have to relinquish her PirateGirl username.

If you want to have me move to Hawaii to help you out with things, just let me know. I have two cats, but they are low maintenance. All I ask is that you feed me. hahah! :)

  12. I like the previous poster's comments re: nutrition and stress mgmt. Leave no stone unturned when identifying the source. I'd definitely follow her advice. I'm so sorry you're still dealing with this crap.

Have you been back to the neurologist for a follow-up?

  13. If there was peppermint ice cream in my house I'd eat it all too.

Oh Rachel, this sucks. Seriously your eye needs to give you a break and start working again.

I'm gonna file a complaint with the eye police. I'll get back to you.

  14. Bad head health is the WORST. Give me something I can stretch or ice or do anything to help improve. Good luck.

  15. I am sending you healing vibes...I know how much you want to feel like your self. I know you could pull off a killer race regardless of what pain you are dealing with but I would take a break until it subsides...I'm worried about you :-(

  19. My thoughts are with you! This sucks big time!!!! I suppose what they say is right, health is one of those things you don't appreciate till it fails.

  20. I'm just coming out of over 7 weeks of 'learning to appreciate my health more'. My brain is still mushy and my short term memory is crap. When I was having all the dizzy spells, there were days were even all the encouragement in the world couldn't help me be optimistic about seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.

It's hard to always put on a face for people around you about being a trooper. There are days you have the energy to bite off a chunk of suck-it-up bar, and days you just want to pull the covers up over your head.

It's normal, it's okay to feel that way. Be sure to give yourself some grace and serve up some more ice cream.

    This royally sucks.

I SO regret that you're having to go through this and that you haven't had more relief. Know that you are in my thoughts.

    Sending a hug your way.

  21. Sorry Rach. Not the best news there. I hope you can still race those forever and a day long legs.
Sending non pirate healing thoughts. xxx

  22. Ok, so each time I check in to your blog, i'm thinking "Oh! Maybe today she'll post that her vision is back!"...crazy how people probably don't even know you and they're rooting for you..not just to keep racing, but so that you feel healthy and you can see those crazy drivers with BOTH eyes.

Sending you hugs from San Diego and honestly, there are probably very few of us that can actually relate to what you're going through, and can only imagine the frustration and worry....but, just know that we're all totally rooting for you whether you're kicking someone's ass on your feet or by Egyptology =0
